Is there a way to filter out white noise from an input source? Ok so now you have the question here is the background. I have a courtroom and I am using a white noise generator to generate masking noise into the room. When in a Sidebar mode the Judge and the sidebar mic's are sent to the recorder and the Gain is turned up so that the participants can be picked up while whispering. However the Mic's are also picking up the white noise in to the room. I would like to filter out the white noise so a clear signal can be recorded. Any ideas?

White noise by it's very nature is almost impossible to filter out.

It's defined as having equal power across the entire spectrum, and so maskes any signals within the spectrum.

Directional microphones, or lapel microphines can be one solution, combined with directional loudspeakers to keep the noise away from the mics.

Or possibly zone the speakers, and don't feed the noise to the ones over the bench during sidebar.

This is more of an acoustic problem than electronic.

Mark

Theoretically, if you are generating a white noise signal from a nexia unit, it will take a specific time to go from the nexia > through the amp > through the speaker to the mic.

If you were to balance the delayed and inverted signal from the generator to the mic inputs,it should cancel out.

This does not take into account the room dynamics and what affect that has on the amplified white noise, but could be worth a try.

Just a thought,Garth
