Multiple OS platform software.....

Hi,

I would like to start a discussion about whether or not Biamp should release their software on other OS platforms.

With Micro$oft pushing the panic button on Vista, and giving it the flick, and the new Windoze 7 (which is still Vista)on the horizon in the next few years. It seems as though many people don't like being forced into buying new hardware just because micro$oft can't get their act together, people are moving from windoze to Mac's OSX and Linux.

So, what do other people think about this?

I have tested all the Biamp software under wine in Ubuntu, it works about 95%, there are some rendering issues, but not quite there.

I don't really want this to turn into a windoze v other OS discussion, but there must be a market for OSX users out there surely?

Personally, I can't think of anything better than using a powerful opensource OS like Linux in my daily work.

I am sick of working for the computers, it's time to start making them work for us again.

Scott

Hi Scott

I certainly feel your pain. I now use a macbook pro having tried of a combination of windows and lenovo. I use parallels and then run Audia, Nexia and daVinci on XP under parallels. This works faultlessly and much faster than on a native windows machine. You then only need to use windows for windows only programs and OSX for everything else :)

Regarding whether Biamp will ever develop native OSX or Linux software, I don't think that this is likely. We have our work cut out supporting these 3 software platfors (with more to come) under one OS - supporting multiple OS's would be a tall order for a company of our size.

Cheers

To Graeme,

I get it now !

Your Mac runs Windows in parallels and that is why your answer to the question appears twice.

Hi Scott and Graeme,

I too use a MacBook Pro with OS X and open Parallels Desktop with Windows XP(sp3) to connect to the Audia Flex system we have here. I have to agree with Graeme that it works flawlessly and is as stable is Windows ever is; BUT I have to add, a native Mac app would simplify my life. My student employee's use a variety of computers, some Windows, some Apples; and generally speaking the ones who use Apples understand the basics of audio but do not have a program that allows Windows to run of their own. Granted other means are available but ........ well you get the idea.

I think all I am saying is I understand your argument for keeping it on a single platform, but multiple platforms would help at least my life, if not more.

As another advocate for macs, mainly because of their resilience when constantly opening and closing them while on the road, and for time machine, I also would love a native app.

However I could see most programmers still needing a windows machine, simply because we aren't blessed to be working exclusively with Biamp products! Until the majority of the industry players, eg AMX, Crestron, also made the switch, a windows virtual machine would still be a must - and having only one platform to support (and test on) for Biamp's developers is also very much in everyone's interest.

My 2 RMB cents worth. Don't bother to calculate how much that really is...!
